Pre-Application Lead Times Gathering documents typically takes 2 to 3 months. The longest delay is usually obtaining the FBI Background Check and its corresponding Federal Apostille from the US Department of State, which can take 4 to 8 weeks. You will also need a medical certificate signed by a doctor, translated by a sworn Spanish translator, and apostilled. Financial documents proving passive income must also be gathered, translated, and apostilled. ## Post-Arrival Mandates Upon arriving in Spain, you must complete several steps within your first 30 days. First, you must register your residential address at the local town hall, a process known as Empadronamiento. Second, you must book an appointment at the local immigration police station (Extranjeria) to submit your fingerprints and apply for your physical residency card, the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE). You will also need to register for a tax identification number (NIE) if it was not already issued on your visa. ## Renewal Conditions & Path to Citizenship The initial Non-Lucrative Visa is valid for 1 year. You can renew it for two subsequent 2-year periods. To qualify for permanent residency (Residencia de Larga Duracion), you must live in Spain continuously for 5 years, with absences not exceeding 10 months in total over the 5-year period. After 10 years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for Spanish citizenship, which requires passing the DELE A2 Spanish language exam and the CCSE cultural exam. Note that citizens of Ibero-American countries, the Philippines, and a few others can apply for citizenship after just 2 years.
Operational logistics
Pet Entry Specifics
"Spain follows standard EU pet import rules. Dogs and cats need an ISO-compliant microchip, a valid rabies vaccination administered after microchipping, and an EU health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel. No quarantine is required if these steps are strictly followed."
Spanish agriculture ministry →Medications & Medical Devices
Controlled medications should travel with prescriptions and supporting physician letters. Review AEMPS guidance before departure.
AEMPS medicine guidance →Household Goods & Customs
"Expats can import household goods duty-free if they have owned them for at least six months and import them within 12 months of obtaining residency. Customs clearance can be slow and requires proof of relocation. Using an experienced international mover is highly advised to navigate the complex customs paperwork."
Spanish customs →First 30 Days Setup
Empadronamiento, banking, health setup, and local document appointments often compete for attention in the first month.
