Post-Arrival Mandates
- AIMA Appointment: Upon entering Portugal with the 120-day D3 visa, you must attend an appointment with AIMA (formerly SEF) to convert the visa into a Residence Permit. This is often pre-scheduled on your visa.
- Tax and Bank Setup: Obtain a Portuguese Tax Number (NIF) and open a local bank account, which are required for receiving institutional funding or salary.
- Address Registration: Register your local address at the Junta de Freguesia to obtain an Atestado de Morada.
- Healthcare Registration: Register with the local health center (Centro de Saude) to get your SNS (National Health Service) Utente number.
Renewal Conditions & Path to Citizenship
- Permit Validity & Renewal: The initial residence permit is typically valid for 2 years and can be renewed for an additional 3 years, provided the research project or employment contract is ongoing.
- Absence Rules: Residents generally must not be absent from Portugal for more than 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months during the permit's validity. However, researchers may qualify for exceptions if their research requires fieldwork abroad.
- Path to PR and Citizenship: After 5 years of continuous legal residency, you are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency or Portuguese Citizenship. Citizenship applications require demonstrating A2-level proficiency in the Portuguese language and a clean criminal record.
