Start-up Denmark Visa Guide

Overview

Start-up Denmark is a scheme for foreign entrepreneurs who wish to establish an innovative business in Denmark. It is highly suitable for US citizens looking to tap into the European market.

Panel Evaluation Process

Before applying for the residence and work permit, your business plan must be evaluated by an independent expert panel appointed by the Danish Business Authority. They assess the business model, market potential, and your team's capabilities. This process takes up to 6 weeks.

Business Plan Criteria

The business must be innovative. Traditional businesses like restaurants, retail shops, or import/export enterprises are generally rejected. The plan must show scalability and potential for job creation in Denmark.

Funding Proof

You must document that you have sufficient funds to support yourself (and any accompanying family members) for the first year. For a single applicant, this is approximately 143,000 DKK (around $22,000 USD).

Operational logistics

Pet Entry Specifics

MODERATE

"Denmark follows standard EU pet import regulations. Dogs and cats must be microchipped (ISO 11784/11785 compliant), vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel, and accompanied by an EU health certificate endorsed by the USDA/APHIS. There is no quarantine required if all conditions are met."

Medications & Medical Devices

RESTRICTED

Carry prescriptions, doctor letters, and original packaging. Confirm destination import rules for controlled medication before travel.

Household Goods & Customs

MODERATE

"Household goods can be imported duty-free and tax-free provided the expat is transferring their normal place of residence to Denmark, has lived outside the EU for at least 12 months, and has owned and used the goods for at least 6 months. Customs clearance is generally efficient, but detailed inventories must be provided to SKAT (Danish Customs)."

First 30 Days Setup

MODERATE

Plan the first month around banking, housing proof, healthcare, telecoms, and local admin setup.
